Accident damage: risks and financial consequences for businesses

Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, whether due to carelessness, force majeure, or wilful endangerment by third parties. Statutory accident insurance covers accidents at work and during commuting. However, it generally only covers work-related activities and does not provide cover for accidents suffered by employees outside of work.

Classic business risks include workplace and operational accidents, which can occur in virtually every sector, including manufacturing, logistics, and the trades, as well as in offices. These accidents can be caused by the working environment, the machinery and vehicles used, or organisational processes. However, accidents that occur outside of work – for example while playing sports or doing household chores – can also have significant consequences for the company. The consequences include not only health issues, but also high costs for the company, ranging from downtime and replacement costs to recourse claims.

Common workplace accident risks

Workplace accidents rarely result from exceptional circumstances but often occur during normal daily work activities. Certain activities, work locations, and operational scenarios carry an increased risk. Accidents can occur both at work and on the way to work.

Frequent workplace accidents

The most common sources of danger in the immediate workplace environment include machinery, technical equipment, tools, and internal traffic routes. Among the typical accidents are slips, trips and falls, cuts, crush injuries, and burns. In production, warehouse or construction site areas, complex work processes and time constraints further increase the risk of accidents. Even seemingly simple tasks can lead to reportable accidents in the workplace.

Accidents on the way to and from work and on business trips

Accidents that occur while travelling directly to or from work are referred to as commuting accidents. There are also risks associated with business trips, fieldwork, and installation assignments. Road traffic accidents are a significant source of risk in this context, especially on long journeys or assignments involving different road conditions.

Off-the-job accidents with implications for business

A significant proportion of serious accidents occur outside working hours. Accidents during sports activities or at home can lead to prolonged periods of absence, which can indirectly disrupt business operations. This creates a financial risk for businesses, even if the accident is not directly work-related.

Whether at work or outside of work, accident-related damage has both financial and organisational consequences. As well as continued salary payment, production losses, and the costs of temporary cover, there may also be a loss of expertise and reintegration expenses.

Limitations of Statutory Accident Insurance

Statutory accident insurance provides comprehensive cover for accidents occurring during the commute, at work, and for recognised occupational diseases. The scope of benefits is clearly defined, covering medical treatment and rehabilitation measures. In the event of permanent disability, it provides pensions whose amount is determined by the degree of reduced earning capacity.

At the same time, the scope of cover is legally limited. It only applies to accidents that are directly work-related or occur during the immediate commute. Off-the-job accidents, which statistically account for a significant proportion of serious injuries, are not covered.

This means that, while statutory protection provides an important foundation, it does not cover all the financial consequences of an accident, particularly if it occurs outside of work, or additional cover is required.

Additional protection through group accident insurance

Group accident insurance can extend existing coverage, protecting employees regardless of where the accident occurs. It ensures that assistance is provided quickly in the event of injury or permanent disability.

Unlike statutory accident insurance, cover is generally available outside the scope of work, too. This means that risks arising outside of work, which could nevertheless impact the business, can be covered. Depending on the policy structure, the sums insured and benefits can be tailored to the company's and its employees' specific needs.
